Fall In Love with Charleston, SC

Three and half days in Charleston, South Carolina was the perfect little getaway that I needed! Although I was 80% convinced that there was going to be significant damage to the city after Hurricane Matthew hit it the weekend before, it turned out to be completely fine! Businesses were reopened and the streets were clear.  Basically, I got really lucky with the travel dates that I randomly picked!

This trip came about when, over the summer, I was secretly surfing the internet at work (ssshhhhhh everyone does it) when I found a Huffington Post article mentioning the 24-hour flash sale on JetBlue plane tickets. Now, I am always nervous about those types of deals because they sound too good to be true (I also never fly JetBlue), but when I saw that I could fly to Charleston for $200 ROUNDTRIP I thought… why not?! I’m a college graduate in free-lancing positions and no set schedule. So I booked it!

That being said, here are my recommendations for your next visit to Charleston!

Restaurants & Bars

Brunch. Eli’s Table, Poogan’s Porch
Lunch. Poogan’s Smokehouse, Fleet Landing
Dinner. Charleston Crab House, Henry’s, Fulton 5 (Italian for a nice palette cleanser)
Bars. Forgo the expensive dining prices at Husk and just grab drinks in the bar house, Pearlz, Southend Brewery, The Vendue Rooftop, 5Church is a repurposed church with a swanky yet grungy vibe. Basically, just stroll along East Bay St. and you’ll find a million spots to try.
Dessert. Carmella’s…I regret not trying the chocolate covered bacon
Rooftops. Henry’s Bar & Resturant has a really ecclectic and artsy vibe with string lights, couches and tall mirrors on their rooftop.  Sunset dinner here is a must.
The Vendue Rooftop has a FABULOUS view of downtown Charleston and is the perfect spot for a sunset cocktail. Secret tip: The HarbourView Inn has a rooftop lounge that is open all day to anyone (elevator to the 4th floor) and the bar is open from 4pm-8pm on Saturday!

Things To Do & Places to See

Shopping. King Street for a plethora of apparel and art stores, Historic Charleston City Market for handcrafted goods.

Architecture. Queen Street has rows of colorful buildings as well as the roads that branch off of Queen Street. Rainbow Row is another great stop as it is well know all over social media for it’s row of colorful houses. If you happen to visit in October, buy a ticket to The Fall Tour of Homes with the Preservation Society of Charleston.  You’ll get an inside look at 5 historical homes that date back to  the early 1800s that have been passed on my generations.

Other Things To Do. Stroll though Waterfront Park for tree-lined walkways and beautiful fountains near the water.  Tour the Old Slave Mart Museum for an important reminder of the harrowing and disgusting slave trade that took place in America. Go on a GHOST TOUR of the Old City Jail! This was so spooky but simultaneously exciting, and there were some absolutely fascinating stories of the prisoners that died there. It’s crazy to think that some of them were put in there for stealing an apple or urinating in public…

What I Love About The South

  1. They serve everything in mason jars! And I LOVE mason jars.
  2. People say “y’all” and “ma’am”
  3. Everyone is so bright and bubbly and kind
  4. Delicious BBQ! 85% of the time I lean towards vegetarian options, but those options were few and far between while in Charleston. I decided to buck up and enjoy some good ‘ole messy BBQ.
  5. Even in October the weather was sunny and warm, such a nice change from the confusing cold-but-then-warm-but-then-freezing-again weather here in the city.
  6. Charleston is drenched in history and I just love soaking it all up.

So when are you heading South?
